A golden win at Colonial Downs

Return Home
October 30, 2008 | Print View

Golden Mattjesty had the best view of Wholeftthegateopen’s track and world record 1:48.4 mile Sunday, finishing 2 ½ lengths back in second, and on Wednesday it was Golden Mattjesty’s turn to impress with a dominant 4 ¾-length victory in 1:50.3.

Golden Mattjesty sped away from the gate to seize an early advantage over his five opponents in the $6,500 conditioned pace. Golden Mattjesty cruised through an opening quarter in :27 flat with Look Lyndsay tracking in second and James Lyon following in third.

Driver David Ingraham let Golden Mattjesty pick up the pace a bit toward the end of the backstretch to maintain his 1 ¼-length lead entering the turn. Golden Mattjesty crossed the half in :55.3 and braced for a first-over challenge from longshot Dream Romance.

Dream Romance got to within a quarter-length of Golden Mattjesty as they sped three-quarters in 1:23. Golden Mattjesty quickly shrugged off that challenge to open up a 1 ½-length lead in midstretch.

Look Lynday finished well along the rail but Golden Mattjesty was long gone, drawing off to win by 4 ¾ lengths. The 6-5 favorite Camphor Hanover rallied late to get third, another 2 ½ lengths back.

Golden Mattjesty set a new lifetime mark with Wednesday’s win. The 7-year-old His Mattjesty gelding notched his 28th lifetime win and improved his career earnings to $255,634. (Colonial Downs)
