It wasn’t a Halloween stunt when the lights went off at Northfield Park during Wednesday’s 13th race. As the field of nine headed to the three-quarter pole, led by Muller Seelster, the track was plunged into darkness, leading the judges to declare the race a "no contest." All wagers on the race were refunded and a consolation pool was paid on the late daily double. “A power surge caused a circuit breaker to trip,” according to chief operating officer Tom Aldrich. “Our horsemen did a great job of dealing with the situation and our judges correctly applied Ohio State Racing Commission rules to declare the race a 'no contest.'” There were no on-track incidents during the power outage, as all nine drivers and horses returned safely to their barns.
