A soggy South Florida evening proved to be the perfect playground for Wally Hennessey, as the Hall of Fame driver visited the Pompano Park winner’s circle four times on the Wednesday program to continue his quest toward the 7,000-win plateau. Hennessey notched his first win of the evening in the $3,700 second-race trot, leading every step of the way behind the 3-year-old Florida-bred filly Famous Lady to score in 2:01.4 for Amante Standardbreds Inc. and trainer Dan Hennessey. Those same connections teamed up to capture the $4,400 third-race trot with another 3-year-old Florida-bred filly, APB, who grinded out a first-over trip to prevail by a half-length in 2:00.2 to secure her first victory of the year. Hennessey was back in the winner’s circle following the evening’s sixth event as the Illinois-bred pacer Purpose to Chance rolled down the center of the track, going from last to first, to capture the $4,400 non-winners pace in 2:01.3 for the ownership of Ciara Stable and Michael Polansky, and trainer Tom Harmer. Hennessey got his picture taken for the final time following the evening’s $4,800 seventh-race trot, as the 3-year-old gelding Anton K pulled clear of his rivals in mid-stretch to score a 2 ½-length victory in 1:58 for owner John Bach and trainer Jim McDonald.
