Holme Town Girl proved 1 1/4 miles were no problem, leading throughout the final mile of the $15,000 Colonial Downs Staff and Management Late-closing Series final to get her first win at the New Kent oval. Holme Town Girl raced in third into the first turn as Twin B Scamper scurried up for the lead and Race Me Valerie took up residence in the pocket. Twin B Scamper got the opening quarter in :28.4 but yielded the lead to Holme Town Girl as they straightened down the backstretch. Trainer-driver Todd Ratchford was able to take the lead and slow down the pace with Holme Town Girl, who crossed the half in :58 flat and led them into the turn after three-quarters in 1:27.1. Nicole’s Scooter made a first-over move on the turn to get into second, dropping Twin B Scamper back to third and getting within a quarter-length of Holme Town Girl. Holme Town Girl and Nicole’s Scooter continued to duel into the stretch with Holme Town Girl maintaining a slight advantage to the eighth pole. Holme Town Girl dispatched that rival in the final furlong but had to brace for late challenges from Rare Filly and a resurgent Race Me Valerie. Holme Town Girl dug in gamely to repel all bids and stop the clock in 2:23.3. Rare Filly was just a neck back in second and Race Me Valerie finished third, a half length behind the winner. The Colonial Downs Staff and Management final was Holme Town Girl’s fourth of the season for Ratchford and owner Desomer Stables Inc. The 4-year-old Tulane mare improved her lifetime record to nine wins from 49 starts. (Colonial Downs)
