Racing down the stretch, Blue Punch, driven by Shawn Christner, was able to pull away from his competitors to win the $14,000 final of the Jerry Landess Series Wednesday at Hoosier Park.
Out of the gate, Blue Punch took the early lead with This Guy Can Fly, controlled by Don Eash, and Love The Band, managed by Jay Cross, right behind. Nearing the quarter-mile marker in a time of :27.1, these three were still competing for first place. At the halfway mark, My Man Moe, commanded by Rick Farrington, took over the lead by passing on the outside. Rounding the three-quarters in 1:27, Blue Punch was able to regain first place by passing My Man Moe.
Down the stretch, Blue Punch and My Man Moe were racing toward the finish line. Blue Punch held off My Man Moe by 2 1/4 lengths, winning with a time of 1:55.4. Don’t Skip Charlie, driven by Jason Dillander, received third-place honors. “I feel like we had the victory inside the eighth pole,” Christner said. “He (Blue Punch) is a universal horse. He is strong at the start and at the end of the race. Also, I would like to take time to thank owners Rex Jackson and Ron Pearson for giving me the opportunity to drive Blue Punch.” With the victory, the 3-year-old Blue Punch, owned by Jackson and Pearson and trained by Pearson, was able pass $13,000 in total earnings this year. The son of Pilgrim’s Punch has won four races in six attempts in his lifetime. Blue Punch paid $2.60, $2.10, and $2.10 across the board as the favorite in the race. (Hoosier Park)
