At the end of the three days at the Bloomsburg fair, the main topic of conversation around the central Pennsylvania oval remained a $1,050 race that was paced in 1:54. That was the clocking posted by Alastor Hanover, a 4-year-old pacing son of Rustler Hanover, in winning a free-for-all event on Tuesday.
Veteran watchers of the Pennsylvania scene probably detect the hand of fair kingpin Roger Hammer in that kind of clocking, and indeed trainer-driver Hammer is also co-owner of the speedy winner with Vicki Fair. Directed by Hammer right to the lead from post five, Alastor posted splits of :29, :57.2 and 1:25 en route to the 1:54 shocker, with I Know Your Lookin 13 ˝ lengths behind in second and the others in the field scattered back as much as 50-plus lengths at the wire.
The 1:54 time by Alastor Hanover is the fastest clocking ever at a Pennsylvania fair track, breaking the 1:55.2 set at Bloomsburg by the sophomore pacing filly RT Artist in 2003, also driven by Hammer.
In stakes action, quite a few horses posted a Bloomsburg-Sire Stakes double during the short meet, with many of them extending current impressive winning streaks. Among the two-time stakes winners were 3TC Apocalypse Hanover, 2PG Drive All Night (seven in a row), 2PF Ty’s Artist (5), 2TFs K T Attitude and Blueridge Saprisa (4), 3PF Big City Hanover (7), and 3PC Mocha Latte (6).
Hammer won 13 races during the three-day meet. In the seasonlong driving competition at the Pennsylvania fairs, Steve Schoeffel drove two closing-day winners to get a 50-48 nod over Dave Brickell.
The $80,000 Pennsylvania Fair Sire Stakes Championships will be raced on October 8-9 at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, with the fillies on Monday and the colts on Tuesday. (By Jerry Connors)
