EJ’s Copperstone has fallen from the ranks of the undefeated. Looking to extend her streak to seven straight, the freshman filly pacer was upset by first-time starter Alexabeth in the $12,000 second round of Indiana Sires Stakes action Tuesday afternoon at Indiana Downs. Driven by Ricky Macomber, the daughter of I Scoot Hanover won her debut with a 1:56.3 effort as the favorite finished fourth for driver Don Irvine.

Starting from post six Macomber and Alexabeth left the gate seventh as Irvine sent EJ’s Copperstone to the point. Indiana Downs’ leading driver paced his filly, trained by Steve Gray, through fractions of :28.2, :57.4 and 1:28.1 before turning for home. This time, however, EJ’s Copperstone didn’t sprint away from the field. Instead, Alexabeth registered the fastest last quarter, closing in :27.1, to win by a length and three quarters. At 15-1, the winner was followed across the wire by Nifty And Thrifty (16-1) and Femeftal Bluegrass (14-1).

The second foal of Vine Street mare Icey Street, Alexabeth was bred by Paul Hauschild and Dominick Fashoda, both from Illinois. The freshman is owned by Frank Baldachino of New Jersey, and is trained by Mickey Burke.
