The Ohio State Racing Commission has issued a one-year suspension and $1,000 fine to trainer Sean Gilbraith and Tabitha Elmore, who is registered as a groom and also as the back-up outrider at Northfield Park, for allegedly manipulating the draw for post positions at Northfield Park. Gilbraith currently ranks third on the Northfield trainers' dash list and has 2007 totals of 442-75-66-61 and $209,290 in purse earnings.
Gilbraith and Elmore have both appealed the rulings and a hearing with the Commission will be scheduled. No further information as to how the two allegedly manipulated the draws during the time period of July 21 through Oct. 6 has been made available. The suspensions were scheduled to begin Oct. 26.
Despite the appeal Gilbraith has been excluded from racing at Northfield Park as the track has "chosen not to do business" with him, according to a track spokesman. Gilbraith was allowed to race horses on Wednesday night at Northfield but his entries will no longer be accepted.
Here are the texts of the two rulings handed down by the Commission:
"Mr. Gilbraith engaged in a practice that made it possible for a person from his stable to manipulate the draw for post positions at Northfield Park on several occasions from 7/20/07 through 10/06/07, benefiting horses in his stable. He also had knowledge of this activity and did not stop it or report it to the judges. His conduct was against the best interest of racing."
"Ms. Elmore engaged in a practice that enabled her to manipulate the draw for post positions at Northfield Park on several occasions from 7/21/07 through 10/6/07, benefiting horses in the Sean Gilbraith stable. Her conduct was against the best interest of racing."
