Almost a Teague sweep

Return Home
July 21, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Trainer George Teague almost swept the three divisions of the Niatross at the Meadowlands Thursday night with Mattultery (1:53.1), Mr. Apples (1:51.4) and Whats Up Now. Only a miscue by the Western Hanover colt What’s Up Now kept him from the feat.

Mattdultery, a 2-year-old colt by Real Desire driven by Ron Pierce, started from post one in his division and was never threatened. Bill Camp Jr. and Teague Inc. owns the colt who has now won two of three starts.

Mr. Apples started from the outside eight hole in his split but that didn’t stop him. He also was never threatened. Cat Manzi, driving betting favorite Fingal Hanover, thought about challenging in the last turn, but tucked back inside and still couldn’t mount a serious challenge.

Teague Inc. and Rodney Mitchell Jr. own Mr. Apples, a colt sired by Bettor’s Delight.

It appeared that Teague would sweep the Niatross as Whats Up Now, with Pierce in the sulky, was leading the way in the third division. But he made a miscue in the last turn, although he regained his stride and paced on to hit the wire first in 1:51.4, just a neck in front of Liberated Artist.

The Meadowlands judges determined that Whats Up Now caused interference when he broke stride and placed him sixth, giving the win to Liberated Artist, a Real Artist colt owned by Arlene and Jules Siegel.
