American horses fail to advance; mare breaks before start

The won't be playing Bruce Springsteen's signature song Born in the USA at the Solvalla racetrack in Stockholm on Sunday as the two American hopefuls, Enough Talk and Buck I St Pat, failed to finish in the top four in their respective heats for the Elitlopp, and thus did not advance to the final.

In the first elimination, the Swedish horse Sahara Dynamite, driven by Bjorn Goop, wired the field and won in a new Swedish record time of 1:52.2 over the five-eighths mile Solvalla oval. The first three places were swept by Swedish horses as Triton Sund took second and Scarlets Aino was third.

The first elim was delayed slightly when the two-time Prix d'Amerique winner Offshore Dream and American hopeful Enough Talk, trained by Peter Kleinhans and driven by Luc Ouellette, were late coming up to the starting gate, causing a recall.

Ouellette challenged with Enough Talk early in the race, but racing alongside Sahara Dynamite took its toll and he began to show fatigue at the three-quarter mark.

Offshore Dream finished fourth to also advance from the first heat.

Buck I St Pat destroyed her chances when she broke stride behind the starting car and could not be settled quickly by driver Tim Tetrick. They were about 10 lengths off the gate at the start. Tetrick said after the race they had pulled the mare's shoes, and perhaps that was the reason for her miscue.

Jaded, driven by Orjan Kihlstrom, shot to the lead from post two and by the time they reached the first quarter Tetrick and Buck I St Pat were challenging. But the move was too optimistic. She tired after trotting on the outside for half the mile and faded before reaching the far turn, ending the Elitlopp dreams of the Burke Stable and her owners.

Jaded went on to win in a Swedish record time of 1:52.1. Torvald Palema finished second, Nimrod Borealis was third and Igor Font took fourth, rounding out the field for the final, which will feature five Swedish representatives.

The field for the final, with post position, is as follows:
1--Jaded
2--Sahara Dynamite
3--Triton Sund
4--Torvald Palema
5--Nimrod Borealis
6--Scarlets Aino
7--Offshore Dream
8-Igor Font
