American Lane wins series

February 22, 2006 | Print View

Trotters grabbed the spotlight on Tuesday night at Balmoral Park as a field of eight diagonally gaited specialists battled for supremacy in the $10,000 final of the Self Possessed Series.

American Lane cruised to a 1:57 victory in Tuesday night's $10,000 final of the Self Possessed Series at Balmoral Park, defeating runner-up Van Joe by three lengths with Miss Gator third.

Trainer Homer Hochstetler, who shares ownership of the 4-year-old son of Primrose Lane with Bruce and Dean Alexander, was in the sulky. Hochstetler got away third and sat back and watched as Van Joe (Andy Miller) and Primrose Princess (Dale Hiteman) battled for the early lead.

After allowing the dust to settle from that battle, Hochstetler wheeled American Lane to the outside and he quickly trotted into the lead as they hit the half in :59.3. Another challenge ensued on the far turn as a hard-charging Four Starz Casino (Tim Tetrick) rolled up first-over to engage the favored American Lane. These two were stride for stride as they trotted by the three-quarter-mile station in 1:28.2.

Through the stretch American Lane began to put away the challenge of his first-over rival. With Hochstetler sitting "chilly" in the bike this gelding effortlessly started to pull away from his foes and was definitely on cruise control as he reported home with his third win in six starts this season.

With just 12 career starts to his credit, American Lane now boasts a record of six wins and three seconds with earnings of just over $30,000.
