The 10-year-old gelding Mighty Maori A notched his first victory of the season on Wednesday when prevailing in the $8,000 featured trot at Pompano Park, covering the mile in 1:59.2. Starting from post six with driver Dan Clements at the controls, Mighty Maori A found a spot on the pylons in sixth place as race favorite King Triton (John Kakaley) showed the way through an opening quarter mile in :29.4. As the trotters marched by the grandstand for the first time, Might Maori A was angled off the inside to track the cover of Pink Wind (Anthony Napolitano), who moved first over and quickly advanced on the outside as King Triton reached the half-mile pole in 1:00.1. Midway down the backstretch, King Triton surrendered the top spot to Pink Wind and started to weaken, allowing the new leader to move inside while leaving Mighty Maori A on the rim to trot uncovered. After a three-quarters split in 1:30, Pink Wind started to fade through the final turn, yielding the top spot to Mighty Maori A who entered the stretch with a one-length advantage and was never threatened down the lane to score by 1 ¼ lengths at the wire. Mighty Maori A returned $15.40, $4.60, $2.40 for the victory. Orpha Lou (Wally Hennessey) made a late move down the center of the track to finish second and paid $7.40, $3, while Son O’Light (Bruce Ranger) brought in $2.80 for third. Owned and trained by Dave Mogan of Coconut Creek, Mighty Maori A is an Australian-bred son of Maori, out of the Entrepreneur mare Fionas Flair. (Pompano Park)
