Aminorex charges confirmed

Ontario-based trainers Anthony Montini, Jeffrey Gillis and Anthony Haughan have been charged with using Aminorex, a powerful amphetamine, by the Ontario Racing Commission (ORC). ORC supervisor Bill Fines confirmed the charges to Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun in a story in Tuesday's newspaper.

ORC executive director John Blakney added to Longley, "(Enhanced drug testing) is something we need to address and something we are addressing as aggressively as anyone in the world. Hopefully we will soon see to it that possible cheaters will look for another way to make a living."

Aminorex is a Class 1 drug which carries a minimum penalty of a one-year suspension and maximum of five-year suspension. The three trainers have been informed of the charges but have not yet been officially suspended.

Montini had four horses scratched over the past weekend at Woodbine on ORC orders, while Gillis and nine and Haughan one.

"This is ridiculous," Montini told Longley. "This is a Class 1 drug that would jeopardize our careers in a big way. None of us would want to risk our careers over something like this."
