Richard Annunziata, 42, of Mahopac, NY, owns 12 horses that are in the care of his 73-year-old father, Ettore, and the group includes the recent $750,000 purse Moon Beam. The Annunziatas hope to complete the purchase of a large-scale farm and training center this year.
"Unfortunately, my attempt to purchase a 150-acre farm in Millstone, New Jersey, fell through because the town said it was zoned for commercial use, not agricultural," he explained. "So I passed on that, and right now we're in negotiations to buy Magical Acres in Chesterfield, New Jersey."
Meanwhile, Annunziata's father is trying to coax one of their most recent purchases into the swimming pool. Moon Beam was an unplanned $750,000 purchase at the Tattersalls Mixed Sale in January at the Meadowlands. The talented youngster was part of a dispersal of partnership-owned horses trained by George Teague Jr.
"We're trying to get Moon Beam into the pool, but he's a little nervous about the water," he said. "We didn't even go to the sale with the intention of buying him. We bumped into [trainer] Ross Croghan about five minutes before we put the bid in. Croghan bid on the other George Teague Jr. colt [Duneside Perch for $700,000]. He told us these two horses were such good 2-year-olds and you don't often get an opportunity to buy a champion like this. He assured us both horses were clean-legged. It's still a steep price, but we took a shot. Plus, we knew about the dispersal to dissolve the partnership." (Meadowlands)
