A no nonsense win at Pompano

Return Home
December 02, 2007 | Print View

After three consecutive defeats where he was beaten a neck or less for everything, No Nonsense Yankee was at his very best on Saturday when capturing the featured $14,000 Open Handicap Pace at Pompano Park, stopping the timer in a lifetime-best 1:51.1.

Driven from post six by Wally Hennessey, No Nonsense Yankee settled in sixth place through the early stages of the Saturday feature as JJ’s Gazette (Andy Santeramo) rocketed off the gate from post seven to take the early lead,  showing the way through fractions of :27.1 and :57.2.

As the pacers made their journey down the backstretch, Hennessey angled No Nonsense Yankee off the pylons to attack first over, and with a rush, the son of Jenna’s Beach Boy blasted by his rivals, taking command of the race through a three-quarters split in 1:24.

No Nonsense Yankee entered the stretch with a three-length advantage and
continued to pull clear of his overmatched foes, coasting  through the wire unchallenged to prevail by 4 ¾ lengths.

No Nonsense Yankee returned $4.40, $3.40, and $2.40 for the victory. Pan Prix (John Kakaley) brought in $7.20 and $5.00 for second, while Sandstorm N (Daryl Bier) paid $3.60 for third.

Owned by Despina Powell and trainer Mike Deters, No Nonsense Yankee has prevailed in nine of 35 starts this year, including four of his last seven. The 4 year old owns a seasonal bankroll of $64,309, with lifetime earnings in excess of $83,000.

The victory by No Nonsense Yankee was the second of the evening for Hennessey, who  closed out the 11-race card with five winning drives, leaving him with 6,958 for his career.

Hennessey also prevailed with Murcielago ($5.20) in the opener, Team Lavec ($17.00) in race four, Professoralbright ($18.80) in race six, and Keystone Granite ($19.00) in race nine. (Pompano Park)
