After pacing in 1:50.4 last week to set a new seasonal national record for three-year-old geldings on a 5/8 mile track, Sheer Brilliance [$4.40, $2.80, $2.10] outdid himself with a mile in 1:50.3 this week, winning a $22,700 division of the Maryland Standardbred Race Fund at Rosecroft Raceway on Saturday.

Driven by Victor Kirby from post three, the Blissfull Hall gelding sped off of the gate to lead the field through quarters of 26.3, 55.3 and 1:23.4, winning by a neck with a last quarter of 26.4. Trained by Jeff Long, Sheer Brilliance upped his lifetime earnings to over $66,000 with this win. Long co-owns the gelding with J Paul Long.

Where’s Tucker [$3.20, $2.80] turned in a game effort for second, closing in 26.2 for a mile in 1:50.3. Roger Plante Jr. drove for trainer Steve LeBlanc from post six, and the pacer showed early gate speed to hit the board. Quick Thinker [$3.00] finished third with Brandon Givens in the bike to round out the $31.40 trifecta.

Southern Blue [$5.20, $2.60, $2.10] won an $11,800 division for fillies by four lengths. Making a quarter pole move for the lead after an opening fraction of 26.2, the daughter of Nuclear High paced through remaining quarters of 55.4 and 1:24.2 to win in 1:53.1. Gerald Kelly trains and owns the filly.

Snatch The Fortune [$3.00, $2.10], the betting choice, finished second with Corey Callahan at her lines, while Herthie D [$2.60], driven by Eddie Dennis, was third as the longest shot on the board at 14/1 odds by post time. The triple paid $21.20.

In the second $11,800 division for fillies, Ashleys Lucky Day [$13.80, $5.40, $3.80] won by just over a length in 1:52.4. Driven by Eddie Davis Jr., the Badlands Hanover filly sat in the pocket through the mile and closed with a 28.4 last quarter. Janet Davis trains for owners Samuel Jacobs and Ronald Reed.

Talk All Day [$3.60, $2.10], driven by David Wade, finished second after cutting most of the mile, while Timeless Artist [$2.10] was third with Corey Callahan in the bike. The trifecta returned $71.80. (Rosecroft)
