Another world mark

Two races after Rainbow Blue set the mare world record for a five-eighths mile track at Dover Downs Monday night, Ron Pierce again took the spotlight. Pierce put his foot on the accelerator, driving Maltese Artist to a 1:48.3 all-time world mark.



Starting from post one in a field of 10, the Mikey Burke-trained 4-year-old son of Artiscape fashioned fractions of :26.1, :53.3 and 1:21.3 before hitting the wire and becoming the fastest pacer ever over a five-eighths mile track.



Life Source rallied along the inside to finish second with George Brennan driving while Boulder Creek and Brian Sears raced gamely challenging on the backstretch and held on for third.



Maltese Artist was purchased last November at the Standardbred Horse Sale for $145,000 by George Leon, John Howard and Jim Koran and he has won four times with four seconds in 2005, earning $191,425 already this year.
