Apple Delight upsets in Damsel Series final

March 28, 2008 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Apple Delight played giant killer in Thursday night's $64,000 Damsel Series final at Woodbine, hauling down heavily-favored Alexis Hall in the final strides for a 1:52.1 victory.

Mark MacDonald piloted the 4-year-old daughter of Bettor's Delight-Armbro Pomme and had her firing off the wings from post nine. The pair took early command but then gave way to Sugar Park just before the quick opening panel of :26. Meanwhile, Alexis Hall had gotten away sixth in the field and Keith Oliver sent her on the attack in the second quarter.

With that one brushing up quickly on the outside, MacDonald popped out from second with Apple Delight and took back the lead briefly through a :55.2 half before giving way to the race favorite.

Alexis Hall took the field into the final turn and came under heavy pressure from an onrushing Lady Mach. The top duo battled past three-quarters in 1:23.1 with the pacesetter finally putting away the first-over challenger.

As Lady Mach tired, MacDonald found a seam with Apple Delight and the mare was able to shoot through for the well-timed win. Alexis Hall finished second with Lady Mach holding on for the show spot. The winner returned $16.10 for the victory.

It was the first victory of the season for the Bill Companion trainee and boosted her career bankroll to more than $135,000 for owners Anje Companion and Judy Gregory of Swissasia, Ont. (WEG)
