Aqua Artist rallied down the stretch to edge Lovely Dawn in the shadow of the wire to capture the $60,826 Standardbred for 2-year-old filly pacers Thursday afternoon at Delaware, Ohio. Driven by Dave Palone, Aqua Artist crossed the wire in 1:55.4 for her third win of the year in seven starts.
The 3-5 favorite Sand Windsor and driver David Miller had set much of the early tempo but the filly found herself engaged with a first-over Allswelthatendswel and Tim Tetrick past the half and on to the three quarters. Sand Windsor began to tire around the final turn and Peter Wrenn, following second-over with Lovely Dawn, tipped three wide. Lovely Dawn took a short lead in midstretch but could not withstand the charge of a four wide Aqua Artist, who edged in front to win by a neck. Allswelthatendswel held for third.
A daughter of Artsplace, Aqua Artist is trained by Mike Conklin for owners Harold Lee Bauder, Harold L. Bauder and Michael Dixon. Her career best of 1:54.2 came on Aug. 30 in a late-closing event at The Red Mile.
