Arch Madness became the ninth trotter in history to reach the $4-million mark in career earnings with a 1:51.3 victory in the $172,200 Allerage Farms Open Trot Final Sunday afternoon at The Red Mile. Moments after the race concluded and just as trainer-driver Trond Smedshammer was ready to start an interview with the track's Gabe Prewitt, the skies opened up and the track was deluged by rain.
By virtue of Arch Madness's 1:50.2 win in last week's Allerage elimination--an effort that equaled his own world record--Smedshammer was able to pick his post for the final. He chose post 1, and he got away fourth on Sunday as Quick Deal and Brian Sears were first to cross over to the lead from post 7.
Quick Deal led through a :27.1 quarter and :55 half, where Andy Miller tipped Sevruga first-over from third. Smedshammer followed with Arch Madness, who took control midway through the stretch before holding off a late bid by Mister Herbie and Jody Jamieson. Market Share and Tim Tetrick also rallied from behind to finish third.
With the win, his 34th in 103 career starts, the 9-year-old Arch Madness sent his earnings to $4,010,631 for owners Marc Goldberg and Willow Pond LLC. The gelded son of Balanced Image now stands eighth on the all-time earnings list for trotters.
