Southwind Tempo won the $144,325 Shady Daisy at Freehold Raceway Monday afternoon, staying game after making an early move to the front that resulted in a sizzling first quarter of :25.3.
Southwind Tempo was fired away from post five by driver Tim Tetrick, but Platinum Hanover, driven by Andy Miller, made "Tempo" work for the lead, which resulted in the mind-boggling first panel. That put the filly who was racing third, Pop Diva, about 10 lengths behind the leaders.
Tetrick slowed the pace to the half and stragglers closed the gap by the time the half-mile mark flashed at :54. After a 1:23.3 third panel Southwind Tempo had to dig in to hold off the tenacious Platinum Hanover, who got to within her rival's saddle cloth, but no closer.
In her previous start, in the Fan Hanover final, Southwind Tempo was burned in a speed duel and was beaten. This time she held on for trainer Steve Elliott, who has said the fillies owner, Alton "Toby" Lynch, is considering entering her against the colts in the Little Brown Jug.
