Nine days after making a break while in contention in the $1.5 million Hambletonian, Xactly Hanover won the Open Trot on Monday night's card at The Red Mile. And just as Donato Hanover trotted his Hambo-winning mile in 1:53.2, so did Xactly Hanover in the $5,000 Kentucky contest.
"It's too bad as you don't get to go for $1.5 million too many times," said trainer Osvaldo Formia of the Hambletonian miscue by Xactly Hanover shortly after the son of SJ's Caviar led at every call for driver Andy Miller to easily best six rivals.
Owned by Paul Nigito, Peter Barbato, Skip Mathews and Tindaro Abramo, Xactly Hanover's win was his second of the year in five starts. He had finished second in his Hambo elim before making the ill-timed break in the Hambletonian final, eventually finishing ninth. Formia said the colt broke stride after being choked down in the slow pace.
