Armbro Barrister came up just shy of his own track record but still did enough to win Monday afternoon’s featured $22,000 Open Handicap Trot at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. Leaving as the 4-5 favorite from the outside post in a seven-horse field, Armbro Barrister wrestled the lead away from O Georgie at the three-eighths marker. With trainer-driver Ray Schnittker in the bike, the 7-year-old stallion stayed clear from the rest of the field from that point on, crossing the line in front by 1 1/4 lengths. I’m A Cool Breeze finished second while Calchips Muscle picked up the show. Armbro Barrister trotted the mile in 1:53.2, just a fifth of a second slower than his career-best mile at Pocono two years ago, which still stands as a track record for older stallions on the trot. Sired by Malabar Man, out of Armbro Rocker, Armbro Barrister won for the sixth time in 17 races in 2008, most of which came against Open Handicap competition at Yonkers. Owned by Schnittker, Kelk’s Inc., and Earl Scheelar, the stallion pushed his career earnings over $683,000 with his 43rd lifetime win. (Pocono Downs)
