Armbro Barrister won the $14,300 Preferred Trot at Monticello Raceway on Wednesday, May 23. With Ray Schnittker at the controls, Armbro Barrister cruised to an easy 1-1/2 length triumph in 1:58.4.
The 6-year-old Malabar Man stallion established the North American record of 1:53.1 last year at Pocono Downs and has earned over $491,000 thus far in his career. However, Armbro Barrister’s prowess isn’t limited to just big ovals. He established a Monticello Raceway track record for his age and gait when Ray Schnittker guided him to a 1:57.4 triumph on June 21, 2006.
Prior to the Wednesday race Armbro Barrister had won three races in 10 seasonal starts. But the past two months Schnittker gave his trotter a rest and now Armbro Barrister is back with vengeance.
It’s no secret that Schnittker likes being on the front-end and that’s just where he put Armbro Barrister. They gained command on the first turn and then just toyed with the field en route to victory.
Craiger, with Billy Parker Jr. aboard, sat in behind Armbro Barrister the entire mile but couldn’t make up any ground on the leader and held on for second money. Last week's winner in this class, Donnegal (Mike Forte), made a run at the leader up the backstretch but didn’t have enough to clear and in the lane he faded and finished third.
Owned by Schnittker, Kelk’s Inc.and Earl Scheelar Armbro Barrister paid $4.20 for win.
Armbro Barrister is likely to be the hometown favorite when he competes in Monticello Raceway’s $250,000 William J. Sullivan Memorial Trot on Monday, July 16. The Sullivan Memorial is one of the “Magnificent Seven” new stakes races the Mighty M had added to it s racing schedule this season.
But as good as Armbro Barrister is, he will probably need to be at his best especially if other eligibles; Sand Vic, RC Royalty, JM Van Gogh, Med Vac, Brunton Tilly and Vivid Photo decide to enter.
In all, 22 world class older trotters remain eligible to the inaugural Sullivan Memorial, named for the tracks beloved general manager, who passed away unexpectedly in 2001. (By John Manzi for Monticello Raceway)
