Artistic Fella gets nod

Artistic Fella, winner of two straight, including his elimination division, has been installed as the 2-1 morning line favorite in Saturday night’s (May 6) $225,000 Berry’s Creek final at the Meadowlands.

The Berry’s Creek, the featured eighth race Saturday, is the first major test of the year for 3-year-old pacers.

Artistic Fella will leave from post five (betting number four) with Ron Pierce driving. In his Berry’s Creek elimination, Artistic Fella won by 2 1/4 lengths in 1:51.2.

"Artistic Fella has really come into his own the past month,” said Pierce. “Last week, when I heard :28.4 for the first quarter, I thought I had no chance. But I got him into the flow, and when I tipped him in the stretch, he just flew by. He had plenty left. I think, the way I look at it, that he's the horse to beat."

“I think he did a good job, but I think he has got a lot more in the tank,” noted owner Joseph Alborano of New Egypt, N. J. “I was very impressed with him, but I was more impressed how (trainer) Steve Elliott had him right for the races.”

A $13,000 yearling purchase, Artistic Fella has already won the $72,770 Suslow final in a personal best of 1:51. The 3-year-old son of Pacific Fella - Everything’s Easy has earned $103,735.

In March of his 2-year-old season, Artistic Fella was sent to Elliott’s barn and won three of four starts for the year with earnings of $51,250.

Second choice in the wagering is the Ken Rucker-trained duo of Royal Man (post one with John Campbell) and Real Mean Art (post three with Brian Sears) at 3-1. Real Mean Art also won a Berry’s Creek elimination and has finished on the board in nine of 11 starts this year for the Panhellenic Stable Corp. of Long Island City, N. Y.
