Art Major filly tops Morrisville yearling sale

The Art Major filly Dixie Dew Blue Chip topped the Morrisville State College Equine Institute Fall Yearling Sale with a $47,000 bid on Monday. Jim Miller of New York, N.Y., purchased the filly, who is out of the 100-percent producing Amity Chef mare Miss Nukachef. Dixie Dew Blue Chip was consigned by Blue Chip Farms as agent for Blue Chip Bloodstock.

A total of 172 yearlings were hammered down on Monday for an average of $9,784, up just slightly from last year’s $9,760 average for 219 yearlings.

The first foal out of two-time New York Sire Stakes champion Becca J ($318,068), a Conway Hall filly named Becca Won, was consigned by Morrisville College Equine Institute but did not sell as her reserve was not attained.

However, a full sister to another two-time New York Sire Stakes Champion, half-million dollar winner Donna’s Girl, sold for $35,000. Wayne Kellogg of Queensbury, N.Y., took home Donna J (Village Jove-Jims Donna) from breeder Winbak Farm.

Kellogg also purchased Morrisville College’s Plumb Monkey for $42,000. The Pro Bono Best colt is out of Guerilla Girl, an Artsplace mare who has produced three $150,000 winners out of five foals of racing age. Plumb Monkey’s full brother The Best was one of this year’s top 3-year-old pacing colts in the New York Sire Stakes.

The top selling trotting-bred yearling was Spin Spanky Spin, a Conway Hall colt out of the Pine Chip mare Spin The Planet. Trainer Dan Daley signed the $41,000 slip for the colt, consigned by Morrisville College. Daley also stocked his trotting stable with the $30,000 Credit Winner colt Constant Contest, consigned by agent Cameo Hills Farm.

The first crop by $2.5 million winner Plesac was met with a $13,450 average for six yearlings. The sire’s top offering was the $33,000 filly Must Please Mom, out of Mom’s Sweetie Pie, a half-sister to $300,000 winner Hang Time. Carolyn Atherton, owner of this year’s stand-out NYSS filly Oh Oh Its Magic, signed for the filly out of the Winbak Farm consignment.

Trotting sire Conway Hall led all stallions with a $24,500 average for four yearlings, while pacer Bettor’s Delight followed closely with a $23,500 average for six yearlings.
