Artsplace improves slightly

For the first time during his several weeks of battling laminitis, Artsplace laid down in his stall last night at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center and slept for four solid hours. Art Zubrod of Brittany Stallion Management said the 18-year-old horse’s veterinarian, Dr. Andrew van Eps, called him with the encouraging news Thursday morning.

“The vet is very pleased with the progress,” said Zubrod. “When Artsplace got there, they gave him a 10 percent chance of making it. But now they are encouraged by his improvement. You have horses that seem to be able to overcome things, and so far Artsplace is showing that he’s that kind of horse.”

Zubrod said he was told the horse’s left afflicted foot is beginning to grow back. “They actually used medical maggots to eat the dead tissue,” Zubrod added.
