The great pacing sire Artsplace was euthanized at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center on Monday morning. The 18-year-old stallion has been battling laminitis and had rallied at times, but could not beat the ailment that also caused the death of his sire, Abercrombie. “We made the decision to spare him any further suffering,” said Art Zubrod of Brittany Stallion Management.

Artsplace sired 15 million-dollar winners, with the elite group led by his son Art Major p,4, 1:48.4 ($2.7 million) and the pacing mares Glowing Report p, 1:49.2 ($1.909,956), Worldly Beatuy p,4, 1:49.3 ($1,900,255) and Galleria p,4, 1:49.1 ($1,814,453).

As a racehorse Artsplace first earned his reputation as a world champion with his phenomenal victory in the 1990 Breeders Crown 2-Year-Old Colt Pace at Pompano Park for trainer Gene Riegle and driver John Campbell. Artsplace was owned during his racing career by his breeders, George Segal and the late Brian Monieson. They syndicated the stallion following his 4-year-old campaign and he stood at stud his entire career at Southwind Farms in New Jersey.
