Last year the Keystone Raider mare, Romantic Adventure, won 11 races and earned over $72,000 and paced top her lifetime record of 1:55:2 at Saratoga Raceway. On Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Monticello Raceway the
Ron Cushing again handled the driving chores and wasted no time taking command from post position four and before the quarter pole Romantic Adventure was comfortably in front as the timer flashed :29 even. At that point Ben’s Daisy, with Jordan “The Kid” Stratton at the controls, tried a quarter-pole move but when they reached the leader Cushing had other ideas and played hardball and kept Ben’s Daisy on the limb. It was a fate that the Stratton-driven mare was relegated to for the rest of the contest.
Romantic Adventure and Ben’s Daisy were locked in a head-to-head duel to the three-quarter pole until the latter tired and began to fade. At that point Romantic Adventure paced away and had two open lengths around the final turn but as she headed down the lane trouble was coming in the presence of Lolita, who had shadowed the leader throughout. In the home stretch driver Bruce Aldrich, Jr. angled Lolita to the passing lane and the Broadway Jate mare began to gain with every stride. Unfortunately for her she ran out of racetrack and had to settle for second money, a head behind Romantic Adventure at the finish. Irwin’s Character, driven by Kyle DiBenedetto, finished third, two lengths in arrears.
The odds-on betting favorite Julie Julie (Jimmy Marohn) was fourth and Ben’s Daisy crossed the wire sixth best.
Sent off as second choice in the race, Romantic Adventure paid $6.60 for win. (Monticello)
