A squeaky win by Minor Supernover in General Brock

March 06, 2009 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Minor Supernover, one of a three-horse entry from trainer Ira Fisher, captured the $56,000(C) final of the General Brock Trotting Series for 4 year olds at Woodbine Thursday night by the squeakiest of margins.

The lone mare in the field, Frenchfrysnvinegar, took command of the field early under the urging of Luc Ouellette, and led the boys through fractions of :27 and :57.2 with Mr Go (Mike Saftic) in the pocket spot. Favored Save My Ashes (Jack Moiseyev) having self-destructed in the first turn, it was fellow Fisher trainee, Minor Supernover (Randy Waples), who made a bid for the lead just past the half. He locked horns with Frenchfrysnvinegar and the two went stride for stride through a third quarter in 1:26 before the feisty filly gave way and Minor Supernover surged to the front.

The colt immediately found himself under fire, however, as a flotilla of colts came after him in the stretch. Standford Bridge and Jody Jamieson made a bid but had to swing wide when the colt rolled offstride. Mr. Go, who had been stalking throughout the mile, tried to find room between horses to move, but it was Society Kad (Keith Oliver) who came rocketing four wide from the backfield to mount the most serious challenge. He and Minor Supernover looked each other in the eye in the final strides before Minor Supernover found the strength to poke his nose in front at the wire.

The time of 1:55.4 was almost three full seconds than the Andover Hall colt’s previous best clocking.

Society Kad was second and Mr. Go hung on for the show spot, with Frenchfrysnvinegar sliding into fourth.

This was the second win in three starts this year for Minor Supernover, who is owned by Ely Iversen of Moffat, Ont. He boosted his bankroll to just over $85,000 with the victory. (WEG)
