Celebrity Deville chose an auspicious occasion to break her maiden. George Brennan, who picked up the catch-drive, engineered the 12-1 upset in the $561,500 Elegantimage Stakes for three-year-old trotting lasses on North America Cup night at Mohawk, sending the formerly-maiden filly home two lengths to the good over favoured Raising Rachel and Windsong Soprano. It was Elusive Desire and Paul MacDonell who were first off the gate, but Raising Rachel and Jack Moiseyev were in hot pursuit through the first quarter in a sensible :28.2. As the field moved through the second quarter, Steve Condren sent Windsong Soprano on the hunt for the lead from third, and she took command as the fillies passed the half-mile marker in :57.4. Windsong Soprano continued to blaze the trail through the far turn, with Celebrity Juliet and Trevor Ritchie reaching up to her flank on the outside but unable to clear. With Windsong Soprano under pressure, Brennan had Celebrity Deville perfectly positioned to come two-wide, and she seized the lead to win in 1:54.3, with Raising Rachel stepping up for second and Windsong Soprano hanging on for third. This was the first win in 10 lifetime starts for Celebrity Deville, a daughter of Andover Hall who is trained by Staffan Lind for Celebrity Farms of New York, NY. Brennan remarked, “I didn’t know anything about her – on the way to the track Staffan Lind gave me a call and gave me a little input on her, and that’s pretty much all I knew. “I thought she had a shot. We got a perfect trip and she responded off it. She was trotting pretty strong (in the stretch) and there was no doubt in my mind (that we had it won).” (WEG)
