Astreos dies in New Zealand

Astreos, winner of the 2000 Little Brown Jug, was found dead at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, in his paddock at Alabar Farm in New Zealand. According to farm manager Graeme Henley, the death of the Artsplace stallion came as a total surprise.

Astreos, who shuttles between Canada and New Zealand for breeding, came out of quarantine Sept. 5 and made a favorable impression during Alabar’s Open Day Sept. 17.

“He also looked just as good and healthy yesterday (Oct. 9) and his unexpected death has really numbed us all; it is so unbelievable disappointing all round,” Henley said.

For the North American breeding season Astreos stood at Tara Hill Stud in Port Perry, Ont.
