A surprise in Dover's Open Trot

Allmar Surprise, the only female and the youngest in the field, led all the way for a 1:57 victory in the $33,000 Open trot over a "sloppy" track at Dover Downs on Wednesday.

Following two up-close seconds, Allmar Surprise got back on the winning track disposing of eight rivals in the week's top trot. With Vic Kirby at the controls the Angus Hall-Benita Victory 4-year-old mare took the lead at the start and set all the fractions waltzing to her fourth win in six starts for Kirby and partner Matt Ivory and now has banked $52,250. Maxter came on for Tony Morgan to finish second. Last week's winner Dingy's Party and Jim Morand finished third.

Tom Barrett's LT's Best never got a call until the last one when Vince Copeland drove the 13-1 Davanti-Light Tackle gelding from eighth on the final turn five wide and past the rest of the field to notch a 1:57.4 victory in the $22,000 sub-feature trot. Twelve Seventeen, a converted pacer, was second with 20-1 Go Nano Go (Eddie Davis Jr.) third.

Corey Callahan found room between horses in deep stretch to steer Todd Wise's Marced Card to a 1:54 victory in a $13,200 Delaware male pace. The Cam's Card Shark-Marcella Hanover 7 year old was followed by The Phantoms Guest (Wolfenden) and Dina's Gamble3 (Brandon Givens), second and third, respectively.

Doris Marine's homebred Roses And Olives scored her first win of the new year winning the first of two $13,000 paces in 1:56.3. Brandon Givens drove the Three Olives-Deadly Rose 4 year old for trainer Wayne Givens. Playland Place (Woifenden) was second with More To The Story (George Dennis), third.

In the other $13,000 section, Down Under expatriate Franco Natura N teamed with Mike Cole guiding the Courage Under Fire-Natural Appeal gelding to his first win in North America, a wire-to-wire 1:54.2 success. Pedo Doc (Wolfenden) was runner-up. Catch The Wind (Roberts) was the show finisher. (Dover Downs)
