Mathers Lavec, a 48-1 long shot, upset the 1-5 betting favorite, Slate, with a half-length victory in the $7,300 feature trot at the Isle Pompano Park Wednesday. Driven by Denis St. Pierre, Mathers Lavec raced along the rail in fourth as Slate and driver Wally Hennessey led the field through fractions of :27.3, :58.2 and 1:27.4 to the three-quarters. The longest shot in the field, Armbro Baroque at odds of 76-1, came first-over at the half mile for trainer-driver Henri Filion Jr. and pressured Slate the last half mile. Then in the stretch, St. Pierre was able to swing out three wide from the rail with Mathers Lavec and come on at the finish to beat Slate with Armbro Baroque third. Time of the mile was 1:58. Across the board, Mathers Lavec returned $98.20, $21.80 and $8.40. It was the second win this year for the 7-year-old stallion by Mr. Lavec. The Mattison, Johnson, Ddiffenback and Mack Stables of Pompano Beach own Mathers Lavec, who is trained by Jim Mattison. (Pompano Park)
