A track record to remember at Cal Expo

It may have been just a non-winners of one event, but for the connections of Foxfire Forgetful, it will be a race they will never forget.

Starting from post position two in the field of nine for trainer Bruce Clarke, the just-turned 50-year-old horseman knew what was possible, providing he could get over a gate issue.

"I thought she had a shot at the 2-year-old filly track record tonight because it was a nice evening, and the track was good," said Clarke. "All I had to do was get her off the gate and I knew I could break it."

Trotting just fine off the gate and making the lead easily, Foxfire Forgetful cut out honest fractions of :28.3, :58.1, and 1:28.2 while on her way to a four-length triumph ($8.20) in 1:59.3. The winning time not only established a lifetime mark, but it also broke the track record formerly held by Lil Eggie and driver Frank Sherren (1:59.4), set way back on July 29, 1993.

"I'm very excited for her breeder and owner Jack Coffey because the dam was given to Jack as a wedding present and the mare hadn't really thrown anything until this one.

"I'm probably going to race her another four times here, then get her ready to race in Ontario as a 3 year old." (Cal Expo)
