Auctioneer Merrill Anderson dies at 73

Merrill Orr Anderson, well known as an auctioneer at the Kentucky Standardbred Sales Company's annual yearling sale, died Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Aurora House Hospice Aurora House Foundation in Weslaco, TX, after fighting a lengthy battle with cancer. Mr. Anderson, from Newman, Ill., and Weslaco, was 73.

Born in Broadlands, Ill., Mr. Anderson was graduated from ABL High School in 1957. He attended the University of Kentucky on a basketball scholarship. He was a member of Troop B, 1st Recon Squadron, 106 Artillery. He was a farmer in the Broadlands area and raised Simmental cattle and Standardbred horses. He acquired his auctioneer license in 1962 in Decatur, IL and has been a auctioneer selling purebred hogs, cattle, and Standardbred and Arabian horses since then.

On Jan. 19, 2013, Mr. Anderson was inducted into the Marketeers of the Year Hall of Fame at the Denver Livestock Show.

He is survived by a son, James (Jim) Coolley Anderson, and a granddaughter, Margaret (Meg) Cristina Coolley Anderson; and a special friend Nancy Brady. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Lyn.

Services will be held at the Joines-Appleby Funeral Home in Newman, IL on Monday Feb 11 at 10;00 am. Visitation will be Sunday Feb 10 from 4-8pm at the funeral home. Mr. Steve Allen of Newman will officiate the services. Burial will be held at the Fairfield Cemetery north of Newman.
 
Memorials may be made to the Newman American Legion Post 201 Newman, IL, or the Aurora House Foundation, 2646 W. 18th St., Weslaco, TX.
