When the third session of the Standardbred Horse Sales Company’s annual yearling auction concluded on Wednesday, a total of 833 yearlings had been sold for an average price of $35,406. That figure is ahead of last year’s $29,897 for 1,094 yearlings sold. Another 250 yearlings will go through the auction ring on Thursday, the fourth and final day for the sale of yearlings. The sale’s strength has been the trotting market, with 163 trotting colts averaging $43,150 through Wednesday with trotting fillies averaging $36,587. Pacing colts—with 281 sold—were right behind in average at $35,020. The top price in the Wednesday session was the $125,000 bid by trainer Trond Smedshammer for an Andover Hall colt out of CR Savoire Faire, a Lindy Lane half sister to CR Kay Suzie and CR Renegade. Smedshammer bought the colt, named Carthage Hanover (hip 695), for Wanda Poliseni, who races a string a New York Sire Stakes horses out of the Howard Okusko Jr. Stable.
