Warrawee Phoenix, a half brother to Warrawee Needy, was the sale topper for the first session of Standardbred Canada's 2012 Canadian Yearling Sale on Saturday, bought by trainer David Menary with a bid of $90,000. But the bigger news was that the average price for the first day of the sale plummeted by 49 percent.
A total of 124 yearlings went through the sales ring on Saturday, bringing $1,013,900 for an average of $8,176. Last year the average price for 142 yearlings was $13,241. A second session begins at noon Sunday.
