Artachebythenumber saved the best for last, posting a 1:55 tally in the $4,500 ninth race at Vernon Downs on Thursday night. Competing in the final event of Vernon’s 16th program, Artachebythenumber cut out the entire mile and had enough left in the tank at the finish to defeat the closing Bookie by a little more than a length in the week’s top test for female pacers.

Chuck Connor Jr. did the teaming for the meet’s leading trainer, Lonny Hale, as the 6-year-old mare secured her second score of the season and a fresh win mark. Robert Siemski owns the career earner of $76,909.

Driver Claude Huckabone III teamed the first of his three winners in Thursday’s $5,500 opener, guiding Walden to a career-fastest 1:56.1 triumph in the evening’s trotting headliner for trainer Joe Sansone. Huckabone kept the 6-year-old son of Sir Taurus covered up in the pocket until the stretch drive, then urged him to the front and held off a closing Spirit Of The Law by three-quarters of a length.

It was the third tally of 2007 for the lifetime winner of $88,000-plus, who is registered to James Harper Jr. and Elizabeth Harper.

Huckabone’s others Thursday successes came behind Anthony J. Farina’s pacer Sporty Suzy in 1:55.4 and John Kiwczak’s trotter Emerald Diamant in 1:59.3.

Owner Lon Frocione took matters into his own hands and guided More Fire to a lifetime-fastest 1:58.3 victory in Thursday’s $4,500 eighth event. On the engine from the start, the 4-year-old son of Giant Hit gained the lead in the clubhouse turn and stayed in charge throughout the remainder of the mile, defeating Moonlight Lilly by nearly one length. Tony Mondi conditions the current four-time victor.

DOWNS DOINGS—Emerald Diamant’s tally came in a dead-heat finish with Chick Flick, owned by Jill and Clayton Johnson. Veteran Bill Arthurs, who trains the 7-year-old son of Movie Mogul, harnessed two winners during the program...Eight of Thursday’s first-place finishers earned new win-marks…Sporty Suzy was claimed from the sixth race by Frank Palmisano, Joe and Lynn Moretz…Vernon will present a live 10-race card at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday before offering a power-packed 12-race matinee program at 1:15 on Memorial Day…Vernon’s 777-machine video gaming facility operates daily from 10 a.m. until 2 a.m., while the track’s simulcast schedule starts each day at 11 a.m. (Vernon Downs)
