George La Grutta’s Uncle Bingo passed five horses in the last eighth of a mile to score an upset win over Fast Tempo and Racing Naked in Monday’s feature at Colonial Downs. Driver Kyle Ater let Uncle Bingo relax in seventh, about eight lengths off of a fast pace for the first three quarters. Fast Tempo shot out to the early lead to cut the opening quarter in :26 before yielding to Racing Naked near the half. Racing Naked led the field into the turn, getting the half in :53.4 as Uncle Bingo remained unhurried in seventh. Racing Naked crossed the three-quarter fraction in 1:22.2 with a 1 1/4-length lead over Fast Tempo and a seven-length advantage over Uncle Bingo. Fast Tempo tipped to the outside to launch his bid and Racing Naked dug in stubbornly on the rail in upper stretch. Uncle Bingo found a seam between horses near the eighth pole to launch a powerful rally down the center of the track, blowing by the front steppers in deep stretch to win by 1 3/4 lengths. Fast Tempo edged Racing Naked for second. Uncle Bingo was making his first start at Colonial Downs and his first start in the care of trainer Stan Hathaway Jr. The 6-year-old Armbro Operative gelding improved his career record to 26 wins from 134 starts.
