Badlands Nitro showed tremendous gate speed to secure a seat near the front of the field from post eight, winning a $29,100 division of the Maryland Standardbred Race Fund for 2-year-old colt and gelding pacers at Rosecroft Raceway on Tuesday.
The Badlands Hanover colt, co-owned by John Celii and Teague Inc., gained the lead with a :28.2 opening quarter. Driver Wayne Long eased back into third along the rail, sitting through middle fractions of :58.2 and 1:26.1. Badlands Nitro, a trainee of George Teague Jr., kicked into high gear in the stretch, closing with a :27.3 final quarter to win by a half-length in 1:54.1.
After battling for the lead at the quarter, Artic Stretch held on for a second-place finish with Donnie Russell in the sulky. The Artiscape colt, leased by the Hutt Racing Stable, worked out a pocket trip and was game in the stretch with a :27.4 closing quarter. Linda Toscano trains the colt. Third was betting favorite Always A Choice. Driven by Frank Milby for Robert Leager Jr., the son of Three Olives had the lead through the middle half of the mile and finished 1 1/4 lengths off of the winner. (Rosecroft)
