Balmoral to drop Mondays

Balmoral Park has announced it is dropping Monday nights from its schedule when the racetrack re-opens for live racing Sunday, June 18. Balmoral Park will now race Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, while Maywood Park will race Thursday and Fridays when it re-opens June 22.

“It’s lack of horses,” Balmoral/Maywood simulcast director Jim Hannon told harnessracing.com Thursday morning. “We don’t have a sufficient number of horses to fill 78 races per week (at Balmoral and Maywood) so we had reduced fields when we came back in January this year. Hawthorne went to a six-day-a-week racing schedule and it proved to be successful. They had fuller fields, and in order for us to put out a product that is worth betting on, we had to reduce Mondays to get field sizes to be competitive.”

Hannon added that an extra race will now be added to Balmoral’s Tuesday and Wednesday cards, bringing the total to 11 races nightly. Two races will be added to the Sunday card, bringing it to 12 races; Saturday’s card remains at 14 races.
