Bangor Raceway has delayed the opening of its 2008 harness racing season from Friday until April 18 due to what track officials said was a late and sudden thaw and the effect on the track surface. The delay also means the Sunday race card has been canceled as well.
"I haven't seen anything like this in 16 or 17 years at least," Bangor race secretary Fred Nichols told the Bangor Daily News. "It's the lateness of the thaw, but also the lack of it.
"In the past week we've had runoff in two or three spots around the banked track because of the way it's crowned," he added, noting that this year, in addition to standing water, the surface is soft which makes the footing treacherous. "It feels like a trampoline. It almost has a little spring to it, so you go from hard-packed surfact to soft stuff in spots and that can injure horses. Plus there's always the chance they could break through the surface."
Nichols also noted that the two canceled dates are the first time the track has ever had missed programs. The track, which was scheduled to race 54 dates, will now open Friday, April 18, with a first post of 7 p.m. Racing on Sunday, April 20, is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
