Basketball star Bowie's trotter wins 18th of year

Before He Cheats, after winning four consecutive races on the Chicago circuit, made his Harrah's Chester debut a winning one on Thursday afternoon, trotting to a three-length victory in a $40,000 Chester late-closing series division, stopping the timer in 1:54.2.

The 3-year-old gelded son of Valley Victor got away in fourth, tracking Benn's Thunder (Andy Miller), Tom's OK Lady (Yannick Gingras), and Exotic Destination (Buzzy Sholty) past an opening quarter of :28.3. Coming through the stretch for the first time, Tom's OK Lady broke stride, prompting driver Tim Tetrick to strike the front with Before He Cheats.

"Yannick's horse (Tom's OK Lady) broke, and I wanted to take charge of the race," commented Tetrick. "I had to get him (Before He Cheats) in the race and up close."

The Dirk Simpson trainee cleared at a half-mile of :57.4, and faced little pressure up the backstretch. Moving up the backstretch, second choice A Gentleman (Eric Goodell) steadily gained, moving to within a length of the leader at a three-quarter split of 1:26.3. A Gentleman continued to press through the far turn, but Before He Cheats turned away his main foe, drawing clear of the field at the top of the stretch and going on to win by three.

Sharpshootennorris (Dave Miller) followed cover throughout the race and closed for second, with Exotic Destination holding third.

Former University of Kentucky and NBA basketball Sam Bowie owns Before He Cheats, who won for the 18th time this year.

Mickey Burke and Yannick Gingras swept the other two divisions of the Chester, teaming up on Winnin Image (1:54.4) and Super Discipline (1:55.1).

In the Open Handicap Trot, American Lane parlayed a pocket trip into a three-length victory, following Woody Woodrow (Daniel Dube) through fractions of :27, :56.2, and 1:24.3. At the head of the stretch, Cat Manzi moved the Carl Cito trainee into the open stretch, drawing off in the final strides to cap a 1:54.4 effort. Rickie (Tony Morgan) closed late for second, with CR Dream Catcher (Dave Miller) braving a first-over trip for third.

Goodell led all drivers on the card with four wins, while Tetrick added three, bringing his total for the year to 1,089. (with files from Harrah's Chester)
