Batavia to remember Bret

Return Home
August 16, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

On Aug. 26, 1966, Bret Hanover won the “Pace of the Century” over Cardigan Bay at Batavia Downs, and on Aug. 26, 2006, the New York track will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the historic night that attracted a crowd of more than 15,000.

Driven by Frank Ervin, Bret Hanover defeated Cardigan Bay by three lengths in 1:58.1, taking home the winner’s share of the record $25,000 purse. At the time it was his 58th win in 62 career starts, sending him firmly on his way to his third straight Horse of the Year honors.

In honor of Bret Hanover’s historic achievement, Batavia has turned back time, charging reduced prices such as 50 cents for hot dogs and soda.
