Battleshoe won at PPK

November 16, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Battleshoe Victor ($3.80) was the 4-5 betting favorite and raced that way at Pompano Park Wednesday in the $10,000 Open Handicap Trot, leading gate to wire to win in 1:55.4.

With driver Wally Hennessey handling the lines, Battleshoe Victor left swiftly from post seven and had the lead before the opening quarter mile in a speedy :27.3. Damon Runyon (Brett Miller) had left from post four to grab the two-hole spot.

They raced Indian-style to the half mile in :57.4 when Table Wine (David Ingraham) started a move first-over from sixth place and that flushed Talk About Me (Anthony Napolitano) first-over as they tried to catch the leaders by the three-quarters in 1:27.1.

But they were unable to catch Battleshoe Victor, who was able to hold the field at bay and win by three-quarters of a length. Damon Runyon was second with Talk About Me third.

It was the eighth win in just 14 starts this year for Battleshoe Victor, a beautiful 4-year-old chestnut gelding with a blonde mane and tail and four white feet, who is trained by Tom Harmer and owned by Michael Polansky of Loudonville, N.Y.

The 42-1 longshot All I Can and driver Steve Trites nearly pulled off the biggest upset of the evening as they finished in a dead heat for win in the second-race trot with 3-1 pacesetter Phil McRackin and driver-trainer Dave Mercer in 2:01.4.

It was lifetime records for both horses. It was the seventh lifetime win for Phil McRackin, a 3-year-old filly by Imperial Victory, who is leased by Dave Mercer of Riverton, Ill. For All I Can, a 4-year-old Florida-bred mare by Crown Can, it was her maiden victory after 20 career starts for owner-trainer Luanna Beeson of Ft. Lauderdale. (Pompano Park)
