Bazire-Souloy sweep in Paris

December 10, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The 2007 season has been a clear success for the duo of driver Jean-Michele Bazire and trainer Fabrice Souloy, and it continued Sunday afternoon at Hippodrome Paris-Vincennes as they upset the sensational 3-year-old filly Qualita Bourbon, who was looking for her 14th straight win.

Qualita Bourbon, a daughter of Love You out of a mare by Workaholic, was the heavy favorite in the the 240,000 (euro) Criterium des 3 Ans. Most everyone would have appreciated a victory for the great filly, but she had a rough trip as it seemed her foes ganged up on her.

Qualita Bourbon opened well from the far outside, but was first roughed up by Quido du Goutier (Extreme Dream) and driver Thierry Duvaldestin, who sacrificed his horse when he did not let Jean-Pierre Dubois take command with Qualita Bourbon without a strong battle.

The speed was too high for both, while the smart Jean-Michel Bazire used the situation and gave his horse Quaro a perfect trip, second-over.

Qualita Bourbon showed signs of tiredness as they turned for home, battled bravely but got bad gaited as she tried too much and was close to a disqualification. She held on bravely until just before the finish line, when Quaro edged to the front. He won in a new race record mile rate of  1:58.3 over 2,700 meters.

Quaro is a son of one of the early and most important stars of the Souloy stable, Kiwi (Coktail Jet), who also was owned by Manuel Garcia. Qualita Bourbon was second ahead of Qualmio de Vandel.

The featured race for 4 year olds, the Prix Ariste Hemard, went to Bazire/Souloy as well as Bazire drove Premiere Steed (Workaholic - Goulette Steed) to a score in a mile rate time of 1:59.4 over 2,700 meters. Pearl Queen, the previous year's Criterium winner and great favorite to win the race, made a break and could not repair.
