Trainer-driver Ron Beback Jr. won five races here at Buffalo Raceway to kick off the 67th season of harness racing here in Hamburg, N.Y.

A nice opening night crowd saw Beback win the first race with Blue Tees ($3.60) for owner James T. Dunn of Singer Island, Fla. Then in race three, Beback won with Pacific Jerry ($4.40), a 7-year old gelding by Pacific Rocket, who registered the fastest mile of the night, 2:00.4.

Next came the $9,000 Open Pace where Beback steered Smarty Merit ($16.60) to victory for owner James M. Dunn of Orchard Park, N.Y.

“Leaving from the eight hole, I wasn’t sure we would be able to close and make up all that ground”, said Beback. “ I had to go three wide at the three-quarter pole, but in the stretch, we had just enough to hold off Holliday’s horse (Shania Raider).”

In race seven, Beback scored with Hi Cee Tee R ($4.80), who led every step of the mile in 2:03.4. The 11-year old gelding won for the 41st time in 186 lifetime attempts.

Beback’s fifth win of the night came in race eight where My Good Sam ($5.30) covered the mile in 2:02.2.

Two other drivers registered multiple wins on the night. Reinsman Ken “Doc” Holliday scored in race two with Itz Spanky Boy ($2.70), and then followed that up with a win in the sixth with Kotton Kandi ($13.40).

Driver Mike Baumeister also had a double guiding Clay Hill King Pin ($4.30) to a wire-to-wire win in the ninth, and then closed the 13-race card with a win aboard Sumaturo ($12.20) in the finale. (Buffalo)
