Before He Cheats rallies to Chester victory

Return Home
December 14, 2007 | Print View

After winning by nearly four lengths in last week’s leg of the Chester late-closer at Harrah’s Chester Casino and Racetrack, Before He Cheats ($3.40) showed his versatility—this time winning from off the pace.

The 3-year-old Valley Victor gelding scored his 20th career win in the third leg of the Chester series, stopping the timer in 1:57 on Thursday afternoon. After showing an initial flash of speed, Before He Cheats took back, allowing Winnin Image (Greg Grismore) and Sharpshootennorris (Dave Miller) to battle for the lead. Winnin Image was parked through a quarter of :28.2, and would not clear from Sharpshootennorris until three-eighths.

Seeing that the leader was used hard early on, Tim Tetrick tipped Before He Cheats out from fourth, advancing first-over past a half of :58.2. On level terms with Winnin Image past five-eighths, Before He Cheats d rew clear up the backstretch while Exotic Destination (Buzzy Sholty) followed cover. After three-quarters passed in 1:27.4, Exotic Destination posed a strong threat to Before He Cheats, coming within a length midway through the far turn. The Dirk Simpson trainee dug back in through the stretch, holding clear at the line by two despite strong challenges from runner-up Exotic Destination and Caviar On The Menu (Eric Goodell), who finished third.

Safari Heat (1:56.3, Roger Plante Jr.) and Benn’s Thunder (1:57.3, Andy Miller) took the other two divisions of the Chester.

Stacelita ($5.80) was a wire-to-wire winner in the second leg of the Independence Hall series for trotting mares, covering the mile in 1:56.4 over the sloppy going. Cat Manzi drove the Carl Cito trainee. (Harrah's Chester)
