Before He Cheats used a powerful three-wide brush to trot to a 1:52.4 victory in the $132,500 Su Mac Lad final at the Meadowlands Friday night, with Swan Image finishing second and San Remo Kosmos taking third. The time was a new lifetime best for Before He Cheats.
Before He Cheats, driven by Tim Tetrick, started from post two, right inside of betting favorite Enough Talk. Driver George Brennan sent Enough Talk to the front of the pack, but the gelding bobbled a couple of times before finally advancing and taking control of the race.
Enough Talk hit the quarter mile mark in :27.1 and stole a second quarter in :29.4 (:57 to the half) before San Remo Kosmos was alongside him. Tetrick followed second-over with Before He Cheats, having waited for Andy Miller to tip to the outside with San Remo Kosmos.
But not long after the half was passed in 1:25.4, Tetrick recognized that his horse was full of trot and tipped three wide. Early in the stretch drive Before He Cheats appeared to be the winner, and with a :26.3 final quarter he hit the wire 1 1/4 lengths the best.
Illinois-based Dirk Simpson trains Before He Cheats for owner Sam Bowie. The 4-year-old son of Valley Victor has now won two of three starts this year after a 21-win campaign in 2007.
A win by Enough Talk would have likely earned the horse an invitation to Sweden's Elitlopp, but he tired and faded to sixth in the seven-horse field.
